How to Help Charities

Helping, Rescue, Friendship concept. Hand gestures help in natural background and sunlight.

There are many different things that you can do to raise money for a local charity. It might be that you want to help a charity that is close to your heart, such as one that raises money to fund research into cancer or one that is helping to fund the conservation of an endangered species. Whatever charity you want to raise money for, there are plenty of ways to do so. Below are a few ideas for you.

Get Involved in a Fundraising Event

Many of the bigger charities will regularly hold fundraising events where people pay a fee to get involved and then ask their friends and family members to sponsor them to do something, such as a 5K run or a certain number of steps in a month.

Volunteer

Most charities rely on volunteers to help them function. In fact, many would not survive without the time and effort provided by these unpaid workers. If you have spare time, volunteering will help a local charity immensely. Even a couple of hours a week will be appreciated. And volunteering not only helps the charity, but it can also be great for you too. Most employers look favorably on those who have volunteered as it shows initiative and says a lot about one’s core values.

Organize Your Own Event

If there are no events that you can get involved in, or if you are hoping to raise some money for a smaller local charity, why not organize your own event? You should speak with the charity first to let them know about your plans and to get some help. There are so many different events that will raise money for a local charity, such as:

  • a quiz night
  • a bake sale
  • head shave/haircut
  • disco night
  • coffee morning
  • car wash
  • pamper evening.

Some people will run a competition through social media where they will raffle off a prize such as a hamper of goodies or a sought-after electrical device. This can be a terrific way to raise quite a bit of cash (depending on how many tickets are sold).

Donate from Your Business

If you have a business, why not team up with a local charity and donate some of the proceeds of every sale. This will promote your business and will help to raise money for the charity at the same time. Take Project Honey Bees, for example. This eco-friendly company makes a range of bee-inspired jewelry and partners with Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) to help fund research into bee decline and repopulation. Each piece of jewelry equates to one queen bee adoption

What to Consider

When trying to raise money for charity, you will be responsible for collecting money from others. You will need to give people different ways to pay, but this has become much easier thanks to the internet. You can set up a Just Giving page, which will allow your donors to pay online. Remember, some people will want to pay with cash. If so, make a point of putting this money somewhere safe and separate from your own money. You will need to deposit it into your bank account at some stage and then transfer it to the Just Giving page or directly to the charity.

Conclusion

Collecting money for charity is a worthwhile thing to do. It can help to raise funds for vital research or, in the case of Project Honey Bees mentioned above, it can help to prevent the decline of endangered bee species. There are so many things you can do to help charities, including organizing events or volunteering your time.
